ODISSEIA Douro White Reserve 2015

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate – 91pts, Mark Squires

“The 2015 Branco Reserva is a blend of 30% each of Viosinho and Rabigato and 20% each of Codega do Larinho and a field blend from 25-year-old vines. It was aged in a 75/25 mixture of stainless steel and new French oak and comes in at 13.5% alcohol. Lush and gorgeously balanced, this handles its wood beautifully. It coats the mouth and rolls over the palate with caressing texture. Full bodied, this still seems fresh, and it has fine underlying acidity. Although this is a 2015 (when most are showing their 2016s), it seems young and still evolving. This is not imported. It runs around 12 euros in Portugal, which makes it a fine value. It may be the best white I’ve seen from Odisseia.” – 29th Dec 2017

OENOLOGY
The best bunches are selected from vine plots at an altitude between 450 and 600 meters, in the areas of the Murça and the Tabuaço municipalities; the grape bunches are carefully harvested to plastic containers of 20 kilograms; at the winery, the bunches are de-stemmed, the grapes are crushed and the musts decanted for 48 hours; then the musts are fermented, both in stainless-steel vats at the controlled temperature of 14ºC, and in French oak barrels of 400 litres; the resulting wines mature in contact with the fine lees (sur lie) with a once-weekly stirring (bâtonnage) until the end of December; the wines that fermented in French oak barrels will mature in French oak barrels until the end February; then the blend is made observing the character of the brand; and in May it is stabilized, filtered and bottled for release after 1 month.
