ODISSEIA Douro White 2017

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate – 87pts, Mark Squires

“The 2016 Branco is a roughly equal blend of Viosinho, Rabigato and Codega do Larinho, with about 10% of a field blend added in from older vines. It is dry and comes in at 13% alcohol. Not imported, this runs around eight Euros in Portugal. Considering the modest price, this is still a nice value, but I didn’t quite find it as interesting as it was last year, granting that they are not side-by-side. It hasn’t been in bottle long, to be sure, so maybe it will still wake up and show a little more energy. Even now, it drinks well, showing reasonable concentration for the level and a smooth, easy feel. Drink it young.” – 30th Jun 2017

OENOLOGY
The best bunches are selected from vine plots at an altitude between 450 and 600 meters, in the areas of the Murça and the Tabuaço municipalities; the grape bunches are carefully harvested to plastic containers of 20 kilograms; at the winery, the bunches are de-stemmed, the grapes are crushed and the musts decanted for 48 hours; then the musts are fermented in stainless-steel vats at the controlled temperature of 14ºC; the resulting wines mature in contact with the fine lees (sur lie) in stainless steel-vats with once-weekly stirring (bâtonnage) until the end of December; then the blend is made observing the character of the brand; and around March it is stabilized, filtered and bottled for release after 1 month..
