ODISSEIA Douro Red Reserve 2015

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate – 91pts, Mark Squires

“The 2012 Reserva is a blend of 50% Touriga Nacional, 30% Touriga Franca and 20% Tinta Roriz. Half of the juice was aged for one year in used 500-liter French barrels; the other half in new 500-liter French barrels for six months. This is not a huge step on the regular Tinto, but it adds some extra aromatic appeal. More importantly, it shows a bit more power, with a more serious backbone and a more gripping finish. Impeccably balanced, it is a graceful and flavorful Reserva that can be approached now, but it won’t near peak for another couple of years, at the least. As with the Tinto, this is a very nice value. For cellaring, this would be the better choice. For drinking now, pick the Tinto. Note: this was released in Portugal last February, but probably won’t hit the USA until early 2016.” – Dec, 2015

The best bunches from the best plots are selected; the grape bunches are manually harvested to plastic containers of 20 kilograms; at the winery, the bunches are de-stemmed and foot-trodden in traditional stone tanks; part of the resulting wines will mature in stainless-steel vats and part will age in French oak barrels for different periods of time; the blend is made observing the character of the brand; 50% of the blend results from wines aged in French oak barrels; then it is filtered and bottled, and released after 3 months.
