ODISSEIA Douro Red 2015

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate – (89-91) pts, Mark Squires

“The 2015 Tinto is a tank sample, out of barrel (it was in about 30% used barriques for three months, the rest in stainless steel) and the final blend. It’s worth a preview (it will be available in October in Portugal for around eight euros retail, but it may not be imported into the USA) as it looks like a nice bargain. It is a blend of 50% Touriga Nacional, 30% Touriga Franca and 20% Tinta Roriz. A classic 2015, very fresh, very elegant and very crisp, it has only average concentration but finishes with wonderfully flavorful fruit. This should be a big hit with consumers. Its structure is good—there are ripe tannins and good acidity—but the intensity of flavor will seal the deal. The key with this and other 2015s, though, is that the acidity lifts the fruit. It isn’t sweet or jammy. The acidity may preserve this longer than we think, but don’t hesitate to dive in.” – 31st Aug 2017

OENOLOGY
The best bunches from the slopes of the Torto and the Távora rivers are selected; the grape bunches are manually harvested to plastic containers of 20 kilograms; at the winery, the bunches are de-stemmed and the musts fermented; the musts fermented in stainless-steel vats are periodically pumped-over and the musts fermented in traditional stone tanks are regularly foot-trodden; the resulting wines mature both in stainless-steel vats and in French oak barrels for different periods of time; the blend is made observing the character of the brand; 20% of the blend results from wines matured in French oak barrels; then it is filtered and bottled and released after 3 months.
